Bathtub refinishing is the process of etching the old surface to create microscopic scratches and pores in the surface, then applying high quality silane to the surface which creates a chemical weld between the old surface and the new surface. This is followed by a 2mm film thickness of silicone injected fluoropolymer coating that mimics the look and feel of porcelain.

Silane is a molecular bonding agent that was developed by the aerospace industry. It was applied to high altitude aircraft to lock the paint into place. It uses moisture as a catalyst. Just as high altitude planes and equipment would subjected to extreme temperatures causing the components to form condensation the same happens when water and surface temperatures cause the surface to "sweat" this is why a great, high quality silane is so important in the refinishing Industry. Sadly, it is an expensive product and it is never seen because it is applied under the finish coat. However, the lack of this product will cause the surface to fail prematurely. 
The second part of this process is the Fluoropolymer coating. This is the surface that you actually see and is the surface needed if you are wanting a permanent solution! The properties of silicone injected fluoropolymer coating are closer to a plastic than a paint. So it is a very hard, durable surface that will withstand chemicals, scratches and complete submersion under water 24 hours a day 365 days a year! Please don't confuse this with Epoxy or Aliphatic Acrylic paint like other refinishers are using.

That is very rare that it happens I will be honest. In fact off the top of my head it has happened only 3 times in the last few years that I can remember. One Gentleman whose birth year of 1936 was in his email address and he was so easy to talk to lived in University Park here in Dallas. I told him my dad was born in 1932. As I was emailing his receipt and warranty over I explained how my dad had trouble understanding why I sent a receipt over.  I know I am getting off topic here but I think this is an interesting story. Dad owned a pretty large wholesale produce house on the Dallas Market back in the 1970's and 1980's He sold to Safeway stores, Dole's Salad, Bud's Salad.... trailer loads at a time and I can remember being a kid ( I was born in 1972 so this must have been 1980) he would buy a load of Lettuce pay cash for it. I can still see the face of "Mr. Bud" that's what I was allowed to call him (And you better say yes sir and no sir and act like a little gentleman too.... was Dad's warning to me when I went to work with him on an occasional Saturday). I can still picture the faces of Mr. Bud and Mr. Marty of Standard Fruit and Vegetables as they would sit in Dads office and pay him for whatever was purchased it was always cash. They would shake hands... nobody short changed anyone PERIOD. All of those buildings are gone now. I took dad down to the Farmers market about a year ago and he said It's all changed ... everything has changed!
